California lawmakers approved a bill that would restrict plastic straws statewide, a move some opponents called "nanny state" legislation.

Gov. Jerry Brown has not indicated he will sign the bill, which would prohibit full-service restaurants from giving out plastic straws unless customers request them.

The "full-service restaurant" aspect of the legislation allows fast-food chains to continue giving out plastic straws without any restriction.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans threw away over 33 million tons of plastic in 2014 alone, the vast majority of which is not recycled.
