The Trump administration announced a citizenship question for the next U.S. census, leading California and several other states to sue.

A question about citizenship has not been seen on the nationwide census since 1950, in part because such questions are said to deter participation, and by extension political representation and resources.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross issued a memo stating that the citizenship question was necessary in order to determine if there were violations of the Voting Rights Act.
