Vine is a smartphone app for iOS, Android and Windows that allows you to make and share short looping videos. The idea behind Vine, which launched in 2012, was to bring video into the world of social media streams. Sure, we may have all viewed and shared YouTube videos or the like, but when thinking about the almost real-time flow of information on social media, still images and short text posts have really been the dominant forms (think Twitter, Facebook status updates and photos on Instagram). Vine’s approach is to keep video short and simple, limiting video clips to 7 second loops that fit nicely into social media contexts.
