Lauren Markham’s book, “The Far Away Brothers,” traces the story of teenage twin brothers who escape gang violence in El Salvador and seek refuge in Oakland. The Flores brothers struggle to acclimate to life as undocumented migrants, while trying to pay off their mounting debt to the coyotes who brought them to the U.S. We’ll talk with Markham about her in-depth reporting on the twins’ journey and how their story relates to the overarching narratives of migration in the U.S.
