For the second year in a row, rates of sexually transmitted diseases have hit a record high in California. In a new report, the California Department of Public Health found that cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis “significantly increased” in 2016, with young people, African-Americans and men who have sex with men having the highest rates. San Francisco recorded the biggest increases in infection rates statewide. We discuss the causes and health impacts of rising STD rates.
