Laos’ “Secret War” — little known in the U.S.– left one tenth of the country’s population dead by the time it ended in 1973. In her debut poetry collection, “Afterland,” Mai Der Vang conveys the trauma of that conflict, kept alive through the memories of her parents who immigrated to the U.S. in the early 80s. Vang joins us in studio to speak to her work, the immigrant’s longing for home and what her parents taught her about endurance.
