San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee committed Thursday to spend $44 million on housing for the city’s teachers. The mayor’s office has identified a potential site in the Outer Sunset on which to build 130 to 150 units of rental housing. Teachers in San Francisco have long voiced frustration with the region’s high housing costs, with some teachers working after hours for ride share companies, while others endure hours-long commutes from less expensive cities. The Mayor’s action comes after 20 years of discussion about teacher housing in San Francisco and after a current working group made up of representatives from the Mayor’s office, school district and teachers’ union effectively stalled.
