Kevin de León, President pro tem of the California state Senate, says he’s “lost a lot of sleep” thinking about the impact of Donald Trump’s presidency on the state’s progressive policies. The Los Angeles Democrat pressed the White House Monday for information about recent immigration raids, and introduced legislation last week to stave off what he sees as dangerous rollbacks of federal environmental rules. But some of his legislative priorities have met sharp criticism, including his “California Values Act,” which Republican lawmakers say will turn California into a sanctuary state.
