When Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent resigned abruptly last week, Mayor Libby Schaaf said it was “a personal decision.” But according to a recent exposé by the East Bay Express, Whent was pushed out over the department’s handling of a sexual misconduct case involving several officers, one of whom committed suicide, and the teenage daughter of a police dispatcher. The story also reveals that the sexual misconduct scandal may be even more far-reaching, implicating some high-ranking officials and officers from other departments. We’ll talk to the reporters on the story and discuss the possibility of a new police oversight commission on the November ballot.
