A 32-year-old woman was shot dead at San Francisco’s Pier 14 last week. The man charged with the crime was in the country illegally despite having been deported five times and convicted of seven felonies. The case has attracted national attention and renewed criticism over San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” immigration policies, which prevent local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
