Booksellers' Suggestions for Summer Reads

Recommendations from Kevin Hunsanger, co-owner, Green Apple Books

The Animals by Christian Kiefer

This lyrical and evocative noirish novel is a haunting portrait of a man attempting to escape his brutal past by caring for wild animals in an Idaho refuge.

Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano by Dana Thomas

This duo-biography splits its tale between the parallel rise and fall of two revolutionary geniuses in the world of haute couture: John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, while also exposing the underside of this $150 billion industry.

Hold Still by Sally Mann

An astounding memoir of family, place, art and memory, deftly told by one of America's premier fine art photographers.

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena and Christian Robinson

The recipient of 2015's E.B. White Read-Aloud Picture Book Honor Award recounts a bus trip taken by a young African American boy and his grandmothe, with the intent "… to write books featuring diverse characters in a story that has nothing to do with diversity."

Recommendations from Luisa Smith, head buyer at Corte Madera's Book Passage

Palace of Treason by Jason Matthews

Passion for Paris by David Downie

Pieces of My Mother by Melissa Cistaro

The Rocks by Peter Nichols

Recommendations from Luan Stauss, owner, Laurel Books

In a Village By the Sea written by Muon Van and illustrated by April Chu

Beautifully illustrated story told in short text about a family waiting for the father to come home from fishing. Told in a fresh way that includes soup, a dog, a baby, a cricket and some surprising artworks. Great bedtime book with rhythmic text and soft colors.

Welcome to Mamoko by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinski

These are hands down favorites for the 4 and up set. There are 20 characters on the first page to get to know and then the rest of the book is wordless. Turn the page and find the character you want to follow to the end of the book as each page furthers the story. Great interactive book that both kids and the adults they let near it will love.

Whisper Hollow by Chris Cander

Set in a coal mining town in West Virginia, the story follows two women, Myrthen and Alta, whose lives cross paths along the way growing up. It's a great read with memorable characters and a story that surprised me with the treachery as well as joyousness of living.

100 Things A's Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die by Susan Slusser

Sponsored

It's for the ultimate A's fan and any fan of the game. It is a good crossover book that both teens and adults will have a great time sharing between innings at the ball park or at home. Keep it in mind for the long off season.
