New Law Requires More Space for Egg-Laying Hens

Starting on January 1, all eggs sold in California will have to come from chickens that live in more spacious quarters — almost twice as spacious, in fact, as the cages that have been the industry standard. Californians passed the animal welfare initiative with over 60 percent of the vote in 2008. Egg prices have already risen at least 35 percent, according to the California Grocers Association.
