For jazz violinist Regina Carter, exploring her heritage through music is nothing new. Carter’s 2010 album of African folk songs “Reverse Thread” was inspired by her West African ancestry. In her new album, she turns her attention to her father’s Alabama roots, taking inspiration from the story of her coal-mining grandfather. “Southern Comfort” draws on historic field recordings from Appalachia. We talk with Carter about her new album and her ability to incorporate so many disparate musical styles.
