Entrepreneur Dean Kamen may be best known for inventing the Segway Personal Transporter. But the visionary scientist holds more than 500 U.S. and foreign patents, mostly for devices and inventions aimed at improving healthcare. He is also on a mission to increase access to clean water in developing countries and to inspire youth to get involved with science and technology. Kamen was recently named recipient of the 2013 Global Humanitarian Award by San Jose’s Tech Museum of Innovation. He joins us in the studio to discuss his latest inventions.

I have a friend who travels the world combating the problems caused by coke. Dental caries in children who have severe mouth pain and can not eat which causes stunting and a multitude of other health problems. What do you, have to say about this?

  • Congratulations, Dean Kamen, for being a true humanitarian, thoughtfully inventing devices that improve the quality of life for those suffering with diabetes. Thank you so much for the technology used in creating the “Slingshot”, working in conjunction with Coca-Cola Global, to get water to people in Africa – Ghana, South Africa and other countries…Brilliant! Once upon a time, on my list of people I’d love to meet in a dream world – Mozart, Ira Gershwin, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, Dr, Cheik Anta Diop, Abbey Lincoln, Dr Louis & Mary Leakey – and you, Dean Kamen. Congratulations on being the recipient of the 2013 Global Humanitarian Award. You are so deserving of it.
