Thanksgiving is just around the corner — but some local food banks are reporting a lack of donations. We talk with local food banks about food shortages and what people can do to help.

    Interesting how our conservative Sierra community has food banks that make sure folks have food. We have lots and lots of folks who keep the local food bank stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables and even wild game during hunting season.

    Yet in liberal areas food banks seem to have a hard time getting healthy food donations. One would think places like Twitter, Google, Facebook etc would be making sure they were donating funds to help bay area food banks.

    If the poor of America would come together and vote for socialism, we would have socialism. Homelessness and hunger could be largely solved. Americans have been duped into thinking they are going to get rich some day. For 98% of Americans, that ain’t gonna happen. Ever.

    we are a family that is living on about $20,000 a year and have repeatedly applied for foodstamps only to be denied because it seems pay too much rent. I have never completely understood how the system works here in CA, but clearly something is broken.

      The amount you pay in rent should not disqualify you from qualifying for benefits. There are many factors that go into determining eligibility. You might consider reapplying, as some of the policies have changed in recent years. You can access the online application at http://benefitscal.org

    This is the time to recycle your earthquake supplies. Many of us have cans of food sitting in our garages heading toward their expiration date. Each year at this time we drop the cans off in the Food Bank barrels and buy supplies for the coming year. It feels good to know the food will go to a good use and good to know that our supplies are current. A win-win all around.

    Thanks for this important program. I wanted to mention a resource in response to the caller asking how food from parties, events, etc. can be distributed rather than thrown away. I am a volunteer for an all-volunteer program in the East Bay called Daily Bread. Our volunteers pick up food from markets, bakeries, restaurants, etc, all around the East Bay and deliver these foods to various shelters around the East Bay. On occasion–if it can be coordinated–we also pick up food from events, etc, as mentioned by the caller and deliver that as well to the shelters. The volunteer coordinator for our program is Patrice.
