Nothing wrecks your appetite quite like the threat of a food-borne illness. But it can be hard to know what edibles to avoid. We talk with Heli Perrett, microbiologist and author of “The Safe Food Handbook” about ground rules for protecting yourself from unwelcome microbes.

Whole Foods recalled its cheese from western states in December because it was tainted with E. coli — and the FDA recently traced a salmonella outbreak in the Midwest to organic alfalfa sprouts.
