“Angels in America,” Tony Kushner’s theatrical masterpiece, returns to the stage at Berkeley Rep. Subtitled “A Gay Fantasia on National Themes,” the play chronicles, honors, investigates and imagines the AIDS crisis that ravaged the U.S. throughout the 1980s and 90s. The play’s messages still resonate today, especially because part of the plot turns on the illness of attorney Roy Cohn, the litigator who represented — and mentored — Donald Trump early in his career.
