After North Korea launched four ballistic missiles into the sea earlier this week, the U.S. announced the deployment of a missile defense system in South Korea. Worried that this aggression could start an “arms race,” Chinese officials attempted to mitigate the situation, proposing that North Korea halt its nuclear weapons program in exchange for the U.S. and South Korea suspending their joint military exercises in the region — a proposal both the U.S. and South Korea reject.
