The Los Angeles Times has announced it will rank teachers based on their students’ performance on standardized tests. Both the U.S. and California secretaries of education support the move, but critics say it’s an unfair way to evaluate teachers. We take up the issue and discuss student evaluations of teachers. Are they helpful? Are they fair?

Guests:

Katie Van Ginkel, governmental affairs director for the California Association of Student Councils and a senior in high school

Bonnie Reiss, California secretary of education

Gary Ravani, president of the Early Childhood/K-12 Council for the California Federation of Teachers

David Cohen, teacher of 9th and 10th grade English at Palo Alto High School
