The usual rush for companies to apply for H1-B visas for highly skilled foreign workers has slowed way down this year. We look at what the economic downturn means for Silicon Valley companies and the workers they hire under H1-B visas. We’ll also discuss the political pressures to change the program, in light of widespread job losses for American-born workers.

Guests:

Robert Hoffman, vice president at Oracle and co-chair of Compete America, a coalition of tech companies including Oracle, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Google that lobbies for the right to hire foreign workers

Vish Mishra, venture capitalist with Clear Stone Venture Partners and president of the Silicon Valley Chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs

Neeraj Sharma, president of Radiansys, an IT consulting firm

Tom Abate, staff writer covering economics for The San Francisco Chronicle

Norman Matloff, professor of computer science at UC Davis
