Prolific 19th century singer and composer Pauline Viardot was admired by Chopin and other contemporaries, but like many female composers of that era she has been all but forgotten. In the first half hour, we talk about Viardot’s life and career – and about a theatrical tribute to the artist in San Francisco this week. In the second half hour, we discuss how surfing isn’t just for guys — it’s a woman’s sport too.

Guests:

Marilyn Horne, opera singer participating in the "Pauline Viardot and Friends" tribute March 20 and 22 at Herbst Theatre (first half hour)

Judy Flannery, filmmaker and organizer of San Francisco Performances' upcoming tribute "Pauline Viardot and Friends" (first half hour)

Elizabeth Pepin, photographer, filmmaker, avid surfer and producer for KQED-TV -- Her photographs can be found in the new book, "Surfing: Women of the Waves" (second half hour)
