A Better Place Than This

“I believe people come here for a reason.”

He is known only as the Hangman. As the principal executioner at Singapore’s Changi prison, there’s something peculiar about how he handles his job. Fancying himself the shepherd of the condemned, he develops bonds with the prisoners that last months, even years, before bringing them to their fate. Then, he meets Sophie, a young Australian woman recently sentenced to death. Defiant as she is clever, she’s not going down like the other convicts and certainly not quietly. This time, he finds little solace in his usual game of therapy.

“I’m not supposed to be here,” she says. Can the same be said for the Hangman?

Written and directed by Daniel Grove. Principal cast: Reza Sixo Safai, Tania Nolan and Alexandre Chen.
