Future Oscar Winners: Meet The Student Academy Award Winners

| February 25, 2016

With the 2016 Oscar ceremony, and the film industry at large, under scrutiny for its lack of diverse representation, it’s refreshing to find that their Student Academy Awards recognizes talent from a large cross-section of international cinema. Every year, this awards show celebrates the best experimental, animation, documentary, and narrative films by student filmmakers, and the winners are honored with their very own ceremony at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Some — like Luke Matheny’s God of Love from Season 1 of Film School Shorts — go on to win in the mainstream competition; Day One, a 2016 best live action short film nominee, is an Student Academy Award alum too.

Binge on our playlist of past winners, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews and acceptance speeches from past ceremonies. Meet student filmmakers like Camille Stochitch, Keola Racela, Helen Hood Scheer, Mauro Mueller, David Aristizabal, Yulin Liu, and Zijian Mu. Who knows…maybe they’ll make the big red carpet someday!

Scope out the Film School Shorts featured Student Academy Award winners. Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel and thumbs up your favorite films!

Above the Sea by Keola Racela – Gold Medal in Narrative Film, 2014

Dia de los Muertos by Lindsey St. Pierre, Ashley Graham, and Kate Reynolds – Gold Medal in Animation, 2013

Will by Eusong Lee – Silver Medal in Animation, 2013

Un Mundo Para Raul by Mauro Mueller – Bronze Medal in Narrative Film, 2013

Josephine and the Roach by Jonathan Langager – Silver Medal in Narrative Film, 2013

Under by Mark Raso – Gold Medal in Narrative Film, 2012

You can also follow our Student Academy Awards channel on Vimeo, where we’ve gathered as many award-winning films from the last 14 years as we could find.

The gift bags might not be as risqué at the SAA (2016’s non-sanctioned gift bags at the Oscars feature sex toys and vampire breast lifts) and the fashion is not as couture, but there’s still a red carpet and there are definitely a lot more smiles in our playlist!
