The former mining town of Nucla, Colorado has seen better days. Thankfully, there’s Don Colcord, the sole druggist operating the only pharmacy within 4,000 square miles. Upon his shoulders, he wears multiple burdens: small business owner, surrogate doctor, community pillar. But what fuels the benevolence behind The Apothecary Shoppe’s owner?

Made at Stanford UniversityHelen Hood Scheer’s The Apothecary picked up top prize of Gold Medal for Documentary at the 41st Student Academy Awards. Our series producer Lisa Landi sat down with Helen before the Student Academy Awards ceremony to talk about her film.
