KQED is partnering with Facing History and Ourselves to co-host a workshop for educators on November 4 aimed at equipping students to analyze and evaluate news, make informed media choices and become active participants in today’s complex information landscape. When students become media producers they are in an even better position to evaluate the media they consume. The workshop will also explore ways to harness students’ own media-making skills (honed by social media) to help them make effective media choices.
Drawing on resources from both KQED and Facing History, including the Facing History unit “Facing Ferguson: News Literacy in the Digital Age,” participants will gain the following skills:

Understand the roles that identity and confirmation bias play in how we interpret events, news, and information

Analyze classroom models exploring the role of journalism and news in a democratic society

Discuss how best to teach for informed civic participation and media literacy

Learn strategies for creating a safe and reflective space for dealing with difficult topics

Gain exposure to various media creation tools that align with media analysis skills
Recommended for middle and high school teachers
