What do you get when you cross cuddly textiles with heavy metal iconography? Punk quilts by Ben Venom. Help students tap into personal interests that can define their artistic style and close out Arts Education Week with our new KQED Art School video.  Art School is on a new mission to find out how artists develop their signature style, and we’re asking some prolific Bay Area artists to tackle this compelling question in order to figure out how one goes about developing a personal style that is recognizable and unique.

The first artist in our new series, San Francisco’s Ben Venom, creates punk quilts for everyday rockers who want to be cozy, as well as quilts that are a little less functional and sit more comfortably in a framed-art context.

Ben Venom is a Punk Rock Quilter: What’s Your Style?

And check out our Elements of Art series to gain fluency in the language of the arts.

Elements of Art Series
With these video explore the seven basic elements of art: Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Value, Space and Color. These are the building blocks of all art and are a good place to start when making, looking at or analyzing works of art.

Elements of Art: Line
Through the lens of the self-portrait, we look at how line is a way for artists to express their individual style and also a tool to control the messages they wish to communicate.

Elements of Art: Shape
Using still life paintings of fruit, we look into how artists create their individual style and develop a unique approach to making shapes.

Elements of Art: Form
Through the eye-fooling genre of Trompe L’oeil, we look at techniques artists use to transform shapes into forms.

Elements of Art: Texture
Look at the how visual artists try to engage our sense of touch.

Elements of Art: Value
Explore how artists are able to create the illusion of light through a wide variety of color and tonal values.

Elements of Art: Color
By considering the vital, vibrant work of the Color Field painters of the 1950s and ’60s, learn how color is a worthy subject for an artwork all on its own.

Elements of Art: Space
Using site-specific art as a starting point, learn about the specific techniques artists use to control and manipulate space in their work.
