{"id":4769,"date":"2010-02-24T20:01:37","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T04:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kqed.org\/climatewatch\/?p=4769"},"modified":"2010-02-24T20:01:37","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T04:01:37","slug":"belief-in-global-warming-waning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/climatewatch\/2010\/02\/24\/belief-in-global-warming-waning\/","title":{"rendered":"Belief in Global Warming Waning"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure  id=\"attachment_4786\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 184px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4786\" title=\"cw-climate-badge-1\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/climatewatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2010\/02\/cw-climate-badge-1.jpg\" alt=\"cw-climate-badge-1\" width=\"184\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.kqed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2010\/02\/cw-climate-badge-1.jpg 184w, https:\/\/cdn.kqed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2010\/02\/cw-climate-badge-1-160x87.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of six possible profile &quot;badges&quot; from KQED&#039;s Matter of Degree Facebook survey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The percentage of Americans who believe that global warming is not happening has doubled since 2008, climbing from eight to 16 percent of the adult population, according to a new report from Yale and George Mason Universities.\u00a0 (The full report is available as a PDF on the <a href=\"http:\/\/environment.yale.edu\/climate\/\">Yale Project on Climate Change website.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 adults were surveyed in late December and early January, and their responses compared with results from a similar survey in the fall of 2008.\u00a0 Called &#8220;Global Warming&#8217;s Six Americas,&#8221; the study identifies six &#8220;types&#8221; of attitudes about climate change ranging from &#8220;Alarmed&#8221; to &#8220;Dismissive&#8221; (see diagram, below).<\/p>\n<p>The updated research\u00a0 finds that while the percentage of &#8220;Dismissives&#8221; is growing, the proportion of\u00a0 people at the opposite end of the spectrum, the Alarmed, is shrinking.\u00a0 The percentage of Americans who believe that climate change is real, is caused by humans, and is an immediate threat, has dropped to 10 percent of the population, down from 18 percent in 2008. The survey group described as &#8220;Concerned&#8221; has, however grown slightly, and the &#8220;Disengaged&#8221; portion has halved, which would seem to indicate more people staking out positions on one side or the other.<\/p>\n<p>Study author and director of the Yale Project on Climate Change, Anthony Leiserowitz, cited &#8220;gloomy unemployment numbers, public frustration with Washington, attacks on climate science, and mobilized opposition to national climate legislation&#8221; as contributing to diminished public concerns about global warming.<\/p>\n<p>As we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kqed.org\/climatewatch\/2010\/02\/04\/climate-concern-flags-amid-support-for-policies\/#comments\">reported<\/a> earlier this month, despite a drop in concern about climate
