USGS scientist Noah Knowles was there to take pictures of yesterday&#8217;s king tide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was already water splashing over the sides [of the sea wall] yesterday,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;This was of course on a very calm day, and clearly there was no storm surge, which could have added another half-meter and had the water up on the streets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the thing about sea level rise.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcdc.ca.gov\/proposed_bay_plan\/faqs.shtml\">San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission<\/a> (BCDC)\u00a0 advises people to plan for 11-18 inches of sea level rise by mid-century.\u00a0 That by itself might not cause huge amounts of damage on a normal day, just as today&#8217;s extra-high tide didn&#8217;t flood the road in China Camp State Park.\u00a0 What it will do, however, is raise the baseline for what a high tide is, making storm surges more apt to cause destructive flooding.<\/p>\n<figure  id=\"attachment_10481\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10481 size-full\" title=\"kingtide\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/climatewatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/kingtide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.kqed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/kingtide.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.kqed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/kingtide-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/cdn.kqed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/kingtide-240x240.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just before the &#8220;King Tide&#8221; at China Camp State Park in San Rafael, CA (Photo: Gretchen Weber)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Knowles said that it&#8217;s important to raise awareness about what the potential effects of sea level rise could mean for the Bay Area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it doesn&#8217;t always hit home how low-lying so many area around the Bay already are,&#8221; said Knowles.<\/p>\n<p>For photos of the king tides around the Bay Area, visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/bayareakingtides\/pool\/\">Bay Area King Tide Photo Initiative on Flickr<\/a>, or wait for the next one on February 18th and snap your own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s king tides didn&#8217;t wreak any coastal havoc, but they did offer a possible glimpse of the new normal for future Bay Area high tides.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11413,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[401,502],"coauthors":[],"series":[],"affiliates":[],"programs":[],"collections":[],"interests":[],"class_list":["post-10473","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-getinvolved","tag-oceans","tag-sea-level-rise"],"acf":{"template_type":"standard","featured_image_type":"standard","is_audio_post":false},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Photos From the Future?
