(Photo: Ed Joyce)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Currently, scientists rely on a few dozen sampling stations to continuously monitor greenhouse gases around the globe.<br \/>\nBut now, the <a title=\"Scripps - main\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sio.ucsd.edu\/\">Scripps Institution of Oceanography<\/a> is teaming with a private-sector initiative to build the world\u2019s <a title=\"Scripps - release\" href=\"http:\/\/scrippsnews.ucsd.edu\/Releases\/?releaseID=1136\">most comprehensive network<\/a> yet, for tracking carbon around the globe.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Earth Networks - main\" href=\"http:\/\/earthnetworks.com\/Home.aspx\">Earth Networks<\/a>, a firm best known for supplying weather technology to TV stations, is investing $25 million in new technology to establish the system in partnership with Scripps, which is part of UC San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Scripps scientists will advise and help design the system, while Earth Networks funds a new research center for climate science at Scripps.<\/p>\n<p>The company is using greenhouse gas analyzers from Sunnyvale-based <a title=\"Picarro Instruments - About\" href=\"http:\/\/www.picarro.com\/about_picarro\">Picarro Instruments<\/a>. The inner workings of a carbon &quot;sniffer.&quot; (Photo: Ed Joyce)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne of the challenges with getting people to be aware of emitting greenhouse gases is that you can\u2019t see them, you can\u2019t smell them, says Scripps climate scientist Ralph Keeling. &#8220;They\u2019re out there, but how do you believe that they\u2019re there or do anything?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Keeling says much of the data currently collected by scientists is limited to longer-term studies.&#8221;This is going to make them more visible to people by providing visualization,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Not in your front yard but on the web of your whole region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeling &#8212; and yes, he&#8217;s son of pioneer carbon tracker Charles Keeling, father of the <a title=\"NASA -
