I’ll let my Do List co-host Nick Abraham, part of our KQED News Youth Takeover, tell you why he loves the band Joyce Manor:

“I discovered Joyce Manor about a year ago, I love their melodic mix of punk and indie rock. Every one of their albums is under 30 minutes, because most of their songs are 2 minutes or less. That’s what I loved about it — it was easy to listen to all of their music and process it. I saw them at the UC Theater back in November and it was a super fun show. They make it a point to make their shows safe spaces, unlike other many punk bands out there today.”

I was more intrigued by the intensity of the opening band on tour with Joyce Manor, awakebutstillinbed. That’s Shannon Taylor’s “extremo” group, based in San Jose. She has the most self-deprecating album title of the year, What people call low self-esteem is really just seeing yourself the way that other people see you, which is heart wrenching, and maybe not a great role model for young listeners. But the music is electrifying.

Joyce Manor and awakebutstillinbed play The Phoenix Theater in Petaluma on May 3, and The Ritz in San Jose on May 4. Details here.
