BROCKHAMPTON is a 14-member-strong rap collective born in San Marcos, Texas, out of a Kanye West online forum. Now in Los Angeles and led by Kevin Abstract, the collective is known for its stylistic reach and experimental curiosity. BROCKHAMPTON (yes they spell it with all capital letters) calls itself the Internet’s first boy band, and then they do everything they can to mock the conventions of straight white boy bands. The members are black, brown and gay. And they churn out albums (three last year) and music videos, and then mock those conventions too. As my co-host John Vanderslice notes, they’re not great lyrics’ writers, but the songs and the videos are brilliantly produced. BROCKHAMPTON plays the Warfield March 3 and Sunday March 4.
