Anthony Brown's Asian American Orchestra. (Kathy Sloane/Asian American Orchestra)

Anthony Brown’s life’s work has been to play jazz and highlight stories about Asian Americans. “Go for Broke” is a new piece dedicated to the 442nd Infantry Regiment, a unit made up of Japanese American volunteers, who served even though their families were locked up in U.S. internment camps. The timing is apt: 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Executive Order which forced more than 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans into internment camps. “Go For Broke” features the terrific storyteller and singer Brenda Wong Aoki, and her husband, Mark Izu, who plays bass and shō (a Japanese reed instrument). The Nov. 4 show is sold out, but the orchestra also performs the work at the Presidio on Nov. 11 in a free performance. Details here.
