Why are women- and trans-led bands so rare in the world of rock and pop? We don’t know, but here’s a way to support both women and trans musicians swimming upstream against the macho current in the river of punk and dark wave: the West Coast Women’s Darkwave Festival in Oakland. The sound engineers, the lighting techs, even the vendors in the goth mall will be women or trans. Featured bands include the Bay Area’s Ink Bats, the legendary Portland band Arctic Flowers, Chicago’s Scary Lady Sarah and many more. And don’t forget your ear protection — it will be loud. Details here.
