Festival Celebrates Dance from the Latin American Diaspora

The Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers puts the emphasis on contemporary. This is not folkloric dance, at least not in a classical sense. The festival, now in its fourth year, always presents new dances from the Latin American diaspora. This year’s theme is Rest/Unrest, and participants include the Piñata Dance Collective, led by Liz Duran Boubion, based in San Francisco. With a response to rape culture called Don’t Grab, Violeta Luna presents an excerpt from a three-part work that tries to rescue the memory of those buried in Mexican mass graves, and Catherine Marie Davalos and her company present a dance inspired by the song “Las Golondrinas” about Mexicans crossing the border into the United States.
