Oakland’s own Quinn DeVeaux has a rough and tender voice, and plays what he calls “blue beat dance music.” My co-host Marc Bamuthi Joseph calls it “black joy, ‘jook’ joint music, like what your southern grandmama listened to back in the day when she was fast and in the mood for some trouble.” We’re both hoping to catch one of DeVeaux’s upcoming shows. He opens for Rupa and the April Fishes (Rupa Marya is the woman who won the legal battle to make the song “Happy Birthday” part of the public domain) at The New Parish in Oakland Aug. 18. Details here. Then he plays shows Thursday, Aug. 24 at Armando’s in Martinez (details here), and Friday, Aug. 25, at the David Brower Center in Berkeley (details here).
