If you know the name Scott Thompson, you probably think of his characters like Buddy Cole in his empty bar, the spy Francesca Fiore, even Queen Elizabeth — just some of his many trademarks with the Canadian comedy troupe Kids in the Hall. But after battling cancer and a bit of stalled career, he’s back on stage… and instead of playing characters, he’s actually doing stand-up.
A groundbreaking figure with Kids in the Hall — his characters dealt with race, and of course, sexual politics — Thompson’s comedy has also always had an undercurrent of self-evaluation: You know what? I’m not perfect. We’re all a little flawed, and that’s OK. Maybe that’s reading too much into it, but it makes us excited for his new direction. His standup act is a recent thing in the part few years, but no matter what he’s doing, we know it’s going to be funny. Scott Thompson is at The Punchline from August 23-26; details here.
