With all the double-speak that’s dominated the news the past few weeks — alternative facts, the ubiquitous pussy hat — there’s something refreshing about a rock ‘n’ roll show/women’s healthcare fundraiser that doesn’t shy away from the messy stuff. Specifically, blood.
Let It Bleed, a rock show and benefit taking place at the Chapel this Saturday, Feb. 11, aims to “empower women, shatter the period taboo, add to the dialogue on the Tampon Tax and The Homeless Period, and invite everyone to the conversation,” says organizer Lauren Espina.
The lineup is packed with notably hard-rocking women: headliners Dead Sara bring good, dancy post-hardcore from Los Angeles, while the rest of the bill is filled with local veterans Wax Idols, Kera and the Lesbians, and the Tambo Rays, all of whom land at different pinpoints on a punk-noise-pop-folk map — but let’s just say it’s going to be loud.
Presented by feminist booker/promoter Sea Witch Productions, the event invite asks that attendees bring unopened feminine hygiene products for donation to Compass Family Services, which serves homeless women and families. Those who come bearing pads, tampons, menstrual cups and the like receive a raffle ticket and the chance to win prizes like a “feminist book bundle” from co-sponsor Green Apple Books on the Park.
