Débora Simkovich is one of the few female composers working in the male-dominated musical genre of tango. The San Francisco-based, Argentinian composer sees tango as a way to create a cultural bridge between her adopted home here in the United States and her roots in Buenos Aires’ Villa Crespo neighborhood.

“Tango is an important form of expression that portrays the soul of the people,” Simkovich says. “Music is the soul.”

The acclaimed, Buenos Aires-based musical ensemble Orquesta Victoria is currently in the Bay Area, performing Simkovich’s work alongside more traditional tango music.

Orquesta Victoria’s U.S. tour is presented by Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, a non-profit, Latino cultural organization in San Francisco.

The ensemble plays its final Bay Area date on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco.
