Hip-hop, as any fan of the genre will tell you, is about far more than music: It’s visual art, it’s movement, it’s a culture. For a taste of all three (plus some music, naturally) join the classical/hip-hop fusion orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj for an evening of talks and performances this Saturday at the SLG Art Boutiki & Gallery in San Jose.
Featured performers include graffiti artist Ernest Doty, the female breakdance crew Mix’d Ingrdnts (see their KQED Arts video below), and representatives from the hip-hop therapy organization Beats, Rhymes & Life.
Ensemble Mik Nawooj Artist Director JooWan Kim and others will lead TED-style talks between performances, based on the question: What is the future of hip-hop? It’s a large-scale, ambitious prompt. But if you’ve ever heard EMN perform, you probably start with this: it’s something that won’t be easily contained.
