Metallica at AT&T Park, Feb. 6, 2016. (Ross Halfin)

Record Store Day may have grown into a vinyl-revival snake eating its own tail, but there’s one silver lining this year: as part of the festivities on April 16, Metallica has announced a free show at Rasputin Music on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley.

Tickets are limited, of course, and available on a lottery system by either signing up for Metallica’s fan club and entering here, or filling out an old-school ballot at Rasputin. Entries close on April 10 and winners are notified the next day.

Metallica has a history of these types of fan events around the Bay Area — they played a four-night run at the Fillmore in 2011; premiered their 2011 film Through the Never with a fan Q&A in San Rafael, and kicked off the very first Record Store Day in Mountain View in 2008.

But it’s been a long time since the band has done something like this in the East Bay, where the band originally formed in 1986. Glad to see them returning to their hometown soil.
