Following the success of their debut duo show Flawless Victory, Hamburger Eyes Photo Epicenter interns Oscar Mendoza and Alexander Martinez recently organized a group exhibition of emerging photographers and called it The Young Jerks, inspired by Rod Stewart’s music video, Young Turks. According to YouTube, a Young Turk is British slang for “a rebellious kind of teenager who goes against the grain.”
Networking through web sites like Flickr and Fjord, Martinez and Mendoza gathered a group of artists whose work touches on subjects that those of us who are old enough to rent a car may not understand, but can still appreciate — MySpace identity theft, B.F.F. betrayal, and the freedom of youth.
Rather than write up their exhibition, I decided to let The Young Jerks speak for themselves in this audio slideshow, which can best be summed up in the epic lyrics of Rod Stewart: “Young hearts, be free tonight. Time is on your side.”
The Young Jerks is on view at Hamburger Eyes Photo Epicenter through October 2nd, 2008.
