This week’s featured band is Judgement Day, a violin-cello-drums trio from Oakland that plays instrumental rock that’s as intense as it is unconventional. Unlike the many who abandon their early instruments for guitars, Anton and Lewis Patzner use their classical training to explore rock motifs, amplifying the results through the manipulation of a variety of effects pedals and the similarly strong drumming of bandmate Jon Bush.
The Patzners’ innovative use of effects and the band’s heavy sound have led many to label their band “string metal,” although their unique setup and ability to go acoustic or electric means that the trio continues to play shows with punk rockers and indie poppers alike. As we learned during the interview, the process of recording their second full-length album has found them exploring slower tempos and different sounds, moving from string metal to heavy, powerful rock. They’ve also gained experience accompanying other more veteran groups on tour, as they did recently with Mates of State.
We sat down with Anton and Lewis a few weeks ago to discuss Judgement Day’s upcoming album, the group’s early performances, and the things they’ve learned from playing with other bands. We also recorded an exclusive impromptu jam featuring Anton on violin and Lewis on percussion. It’s a great performance that showcases the band’s intuitive sense of creativity and eye-widening musicianship.
