On Friday, February 22, 2008, the entrance to the Verdi Club in the Mission looked similar to a sold-out concert at the Fillmore. Hundreds of people showed up to catch a night of free art and music. The Monster Drawing Rally, a live drawing fundraiser for the non-profit Southern Exposure, featured over 130 artists. During four one-hour shifts the artists, sitting side-by-side, drew cartoons, comics, animals, portraits, the abstract, the realistic, some even drew monsters, although that was not mandatory.
After each hour set, the drawings were put up onto the wall to be admired and hopefully purchased. Each piece, some more detailed than others, cost 60 bucks. All of the proceeds for the event went towards Southern Exposure’s Exhibitions and Artists in Education Programs. The event has expanded throughout the years to include more artists and raise more money.
