About “Trial of the Century”
In the 90s, I’d been quite captivated by the OJ trial and what it said about race, class and celebrity in America. The pattern of celebrity is frenzy followed by collective forgetting, so that when OJ’s trial was hailed as the “Trial of the Century,” I had my doubts, and sure enough, a decade later, it’s barely worth a passing mention. I wanted to recreate the crime from the perspective of the only bystander, the victim’s dog, an akita named Kato. Kato feels deeply for OJ’s torment, but of course, it’s sympathy from a dog.
