A Son Interprets His Father's Most Famous Music

A Love Supreme is John Coltrane’s most famous album, a deep inquiry into sound and his relationship to God. Now, Ravi Coltrane, John’s son, has gathered an all-star quintet to recreate the piece, originally released in early 1965. As this week’s Do List co-host Gabe Meline notes, Ravi’s not the only son helping re-create the classic album: there’s also Matthew Garrison, son of bassist Jimmy Garrison, from Coltrane’s classic quartet. The week also features Jack DeJohnette, Nicholas Payton, and a night dedicated to Coltrane’s spiritual son, Pharaoh Sanders, whose playing is a pure vibration of love and unity.
