First, we had a talented and motivated group of 14 teens from all over Oakland.\u00a0 Second, TILT (the youth media program at Ninth Street Independent Film Center) and Disposable Film Festival (DFF) crafted an action-packed curriculum that had the teens on the flip cameras right away.\u00a0 Teens were able to express themselves in the hands-on video activity <em>When People See Me<\/em>.\u00a0 This effective icebreaker allowed the teens to quickly get to know each other and therefore they were ready to jump into a brief discussion about using mobile media for social action and change. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/americangraduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/07\/Youth-Lab-009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-699\" title=\"Youth Lab 009\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/americangraduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/07\/Youth-Lab-009-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a>The next hands-on camera activity focused on Media Aesthetics and the importance of framing camera shots, sound and lighting.\u00a0 Teens were broke into teams of two to explore the neighborhood (well block radius) as they practiced different types of camera shot-sizes, angles, and movement. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">(Example of a few of the Video Scavenger Hunt camera directions)<\/span><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">___ \u00a0Extreme close up of a small object that has big meaning<br \/>\n___ \u00a0Smooth pan of the street<br \/>\n___ \u00a0A shot (any size and angle) of a reflection that represents YOU<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">___ \u00a0Smooth tilt up to a positive message<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Once the group had a chance to practice and explore, it was time to move onto the main mobile media event\u2026<em>Mobile Mission Speed Production.\u00a0 <\/em>Once again the teens broke into teams of two to brainstorm topics and themes related to success, leadership, learning, education, etc.\u00a0 Since time was limited \u2013 only 1 hour to per-production and production, each step of the process was timed.<\/span><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Brainstorming \u2013 5 min <\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Deciding on an idea \u2013 5 min<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Writing 1-2 sentence synopsis describing the message of the short video \u2013 5 min<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Writing a shot list \u2013 (what will the video look like) \u2013 15 min<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Video shoot \u2013 30 min<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/americangraduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/07\/Youth-Lab-018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-700\" title=\"Youth Lab 018\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/americangraduate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2012\/07\/Youth-Lab-018-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a>After a very short break the production teams spent the next 2 hours editing, which included getting acquainted with iMovie \u2013 learning its advantages and limitations; making difficult editing decisions \u2013 what shots to keep?
