On Thursday, the district\u00a0celebrated its 14th such opening at West Oakland Middle School.\u00a0 KQED&#8217;s Caitlin Esch visited a school-based clinic that opened a year ago to see how\u00a0it\u2019s changing the community.<\/p>\n<p>The health center at Havenscourt Middle School is a cross between a\u00a0pediatrician\u2019s office and a teen clinic. Nurse practitioner Karen\u00a0Gersten-Rothenberg says students can get sports physicals, vaccines, and pregnancy tests. They can even get their cavities filled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For some students, we are the primary care\u00a0provider,&#8221; Gersten-Rothenberg says. &#8220;Many students don\u2019t have access to primary care because\u00a0they\u2019re not insurable, because they&#8217;re undocumented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The clinic sees up to 50 students a week. The district is hoping\u00a0on-site health centers will cut down on absenteeism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We see a student, they go right back to class,&#8221; says Gersten-Rothenberg. &#8220;When a student has to go a doctor in the community, they\u2019re likely to\u00a0miss at least half the day, if not the full day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The district will study whether access to health clinics at schools improves academic performance and reduces trips to the emergency room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/story\/2012\/11\/02\/110522\/oakland_schools_providing_education_and_health_care?category=education\">Original post.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 2, 2012 By Caitlin Esch In Oakland, schools are partnering with community health organizations to open\u00a0clinics on campuses.
