Mon 6/27: DT9 PSIP issue for Over the Air viewers

RESOLVED: PSIP was restored at apx 2:50pm Monday. Our signal should be ID’g as 9.1, 9.2 & 9.3 again.

Our Over the Air (OTA) signal for DT9 is still transmitting. However, we are aware that the PSIP information line in our OTA signal has stopped. Engineers are working to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, OTA viewers may be able to find the three channels at 30.1, 30.2 & 30.3 until the issue is fixed. However, the onscreen guide info will not be available until PSIP is restored, and the channel reverts to identifying itself as “9”.

Additional info for the curious: since the digital conversion several years ago, very few stations actually transmit on the old frequency that the channel number identified. The FCC didn’t want viewers to have to learn new numbers for all their local TV stations, so even tho TV stations now transmit on different frequencies from their analog days, a “Virtual ID” is sent as part of the PSIP info, which tricks your TV into labeling the new frequency with the old number. So, with the virtual ID currently not working, our signal is currently labeled with the Real Frequency number, which is 30.

And what does “PSIP” stand for? Program and System Information Protocol (the data line that includes the program guide info and the virtual ID for changing “30” into “9” as our channel number).
