The new higher numbers stem in part because of a different method of counting. Last year's "1 in 88" number came from diagnosis reflected in school records or other kinds of official reports. This study asked parents and found 1 in 50 children has some form of autism.

Latest survey reflects marked increase in number of kids with an autism spectrum disorder. Like previous studies, a new report says boys are more than girls to have autism. Rates of all forms of autism in the U.S.
