Veteran California journalist Daniel Weintraub presents his annual assessment of quality of life in California. He looks at a handful of measures of his own choosing -- from income to infant mortality to air quality. It's a "mixed picture," he writes.

Today I present my annual California Quality of Life Index, an unscientific, imprecise, but I hope interesting statistical glimpse at life in California. I have chosen 13 statistical measures from the dozens or hundreds that could be used to assess the health, welfare, education and economic vitality of Californians.
